The Aerofoils eFoil Handheld Controller – often referred to as a hand controller or remote control – is the only direct interface between you and the board. It transmits your throttle input wirelessly to the motor, displays live riding data on an integrated screen and cuts motor power instantly the moment you release the trigger. Understanding how the hand controller is built and what each component does means you know exactly what to expect out on the water.

What the Handheld Controller Does

The controller is far more than a simple on/off switch. It regulates motor power continuously through a proportional trigger mechanism that responds directly to finger pressure. The gentler you squeeze, the smoother the acceleration.

At the same time, the board sends real-time data back to the controller: current speed, battery level and the active riding mode. Every piece of information you need on the water sits right in your hand – no need to glance at the board.

Physical Design: What You're Holding

The Aerofoils hand controller weighs 191 g and is engineered for use in a wet, high-movement environment. One detail that matters in this context: it floats – if it goes into the water during a fall, it stays at the surface.

  • Ergonomic grip – shaped for a secure one-handed hold, even with gloves or wet hands
  • Speed trigger – proportional throttle on the back of the controller, returns automatically to zero when released
  • Three control buttons – on the top face for navigation, mode switching and motor enable
  • Dead man's switch – built-in safety feature: releasing the trigger immediately cuts motor power
  • Wrist leash attachment – keeps the controller connected to your wrist if it slips from your hand
  • Buoyant – stays at the water's surface in the event of a fall
  • Wireless charging – simply click the remote into the dock and charge

The trigger is the most critical component. It is the sole input for acceleration – there is no separate brake. The board slows down exclusively through water resistance and rolls to a controlled stop.

The Display: Riding Data at a Glance

The controller features an integrated sunlight-readable high-brightness color display – meaning it's legible in direct sunlight on the water, in full color, with no anti-glare filter or shade required. No smartphone needed, no looking down at the board.

The controller offers three switchable screens: the home screen, the riding screen and the board computer. Switch between them with a 2-second press of the middle button.

Why this matters:

Knowing your battery level mid-session prevents an unexpected stop far from shore. Seeing the active mode protects you from unintended full-throttle acceleration after a profile switch.

Connection Between Controller and Board

The Aerofoils controller communicates with the board via a 2.4 GHz wireless link (IEEE 802.11). This is the same frequency used in professional industrial applications for reliable real-time transmission – low latency, interference-resistant and stable.

A separate wireless connection to your smartphone is used exclusively for pairing with the Aerofoils App. Board control and app connectivity are fully independent of one another.

If the wireless link is interrupted – for example if the controller is submerged for too long during a fall – the immobilizer activates automatically and motor power is cut. The system will not accelerate without an active input signal. This behavior is intentional, not a fault.

Water Protection and Battery Performance

The hand controller is IP68 certified to 2 metres – the highest standard protection rating for electronics in continuous underwater use. For the kind of submersion that happens when you fall off a foil board, this is more than sufficient.

Both work together as a system. You configure your preferred riding modes in the app – then select them via the controller display out on the water. Adjustments to sensitivity, speed limits for beginner sessions or GPS-based caps are made exclusively through the app, not via the controller buttons.

How long does the controller battery last?

What does the controller display show?

The display shows in real time: current speed, board battery level, active riding mode, selected power level, GPS status and the controller's own battery reserve. All values update continuously while riding. A smartphone is not required on the water.

What happens if I let go of or drop the controller?

Releasing the speed trigger immediately cuts motor power. In addition, the immobilizer activates if the controller is submerged for too long or if no input is registered for 30 seconds. The board then decelerates naturally without an abrupt stop.
