eFoil Mast Length: 60 cm or 80 cm?

What the difference actually means on the water – and which length suits your skill level and riding spot.

The eFoil mast length determines how high you ride above the water surface, how forgiving the system is when things go wrong, and how agile you are through turns. Aerofoils offers two mast lengths, both of which can be mounted on any of the eFoils in a modular fashion. The 60 cm option is particularly well suited to beginners and flat water, while the 80 cm option is aimed at intermediate to advanced riders who want to push performance in the ocean or in waves. Which length is right for you comes down to three factors: your experience level, where you ride, and your body weight.

What the eFoil Mast Length Actually Does

The mast connects the board to the foil underwater. Its length defines how far above the water surface the rider glides and how sensitively the foil responds to weight shifts – making it one of the most critical variables in eFoiling. Put simply: a shorter mast is more forgiving, a longer mast is more rewarding.

With the 60 cm mast, you ride closer to the water. The lever arm is shorter, mistakes have less dramatic consequences, and the board is easier to balance. With the 80 cm mast, you rise further out of the water – though conditions play a role here, since longer masts can be problematic in shallow water. The ride becomes smoother, and the wings stay deeper in the water through turns, enabling steeper lean angles without cavitation. At the same time, the system becomes more sensitive to every weight shift.

The Aerofoils 60 cm eFoil Carbon Mast

The 60 cm mast is the standard equipment on the Aerofoils Hyperfly and the Airfly, each paired with Easyride 2000 series wings. For beginners, mast lengths in the 60–70 cm range are typical, as shorter to mid-length masts help riders find their balance faster. It can also be fitted to an Aerofoils Adventure – for example with 2000 or 1350 series wings – making it the go-to choice for eFoil schools and rental operators thanks to its versatility.

The standout feature of the 60 cm mast is the Anti-Breach System (ABS). It consists of an opening integrated into the mast that channels air into the drive unit the moment the mast breaks through the water surface. This automatically reduces thrust, and the rider and board lose altitude in a controlled manner. The system works without any electronics – purely through physics – which makes it exceptionally reliable. No other eFoil manufacturer offers a comparable system. Shorter masts in the 55–65 cm range also provide greater stability, easier control, and a lower fall height.

The ABS was originally developed for the Hyperfly to prevent crashes into the handlebar. For beginners, it is especially valuable because it accelerates the learning process: riders who crash less often can focus on actually riding sooner and build the skills to handle more challenging situations.

Recommended for:

  • eFoil beginners, regardless of body weight
  • Lakes, inland waterways, and calm conditions
  • Aerofoils Hyperfly and Airfly (fitted as standard)
  • eFoil schools and rental operations (Adventure with 2000 or 1350 series wings)

The Aerofoils 80 cm eFoil Mast

The 80 cm mast is designed for riders who have already mastered the basics of eFoiling and want to ride in the ocean, in waves, or in choppy conditions. Longer masts in the 80–90 cm+ range are intended for experienced riders who want to carve with performance at higher speeds. The extra clearance from the water surface makes riding over rough water smoother and more composed. The real difference shows up in cornering: because the wings stay deeper in the water when you initiate a turn, steeper lean angles are possible without cavitation. This allows for tighter, more controlled turns and a higher overall performance ceiling than the 60 cm mast can offer.

For riders from around 90 kg upward, the 80 cm mast is recommended once they have developed a solid feel for foiling. The additional weight increases the system's inertia, and the greater mast length gives the foil the headroom it needs to keep working cleanly.

The 80 cm mast comes without the Anti-Breach System – and that's a deliberate choice. Advanced riders actively manage their ride height through weight distribution and don't need an automatically intervening system. For those who want to ride at higher speeds, this mast is the right tool, while shorter masts remain the more stable and controllable option.

Recommended for:

  • Intermediate to advanced eFoil riders with solid foundational experience
  • Ocean, wind and waves, chop, and open water
  • Performance riding with tighter turns and greater ride height
  • Riders from approximately 90 kg with existing riding experience

Choosing Your eFoil Mast Length: Quick Reference

The table below shows which mast length fits which situation. Many manufacturers position 70–75 cm as an all-rounder; Aerofoils deliberately separates the choice between 60 cm and 80 cm. Common options on the market are also often listed in inches – 28 inches ≈ 71 cm and 32 inches ≈ 81 cm – and depending on setup size, 70–85 cm is sometimes cited as the standard range for beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions About eFoil Mast Length

Which eFoil mast length is suitable for beginners?

For beginners, the 60 cm mast is the right choice – regardless of body weight. It keeps you closer to the water, responds more forgivingly to mistakes, and comes equipped with the Anti-Breach System (ABS), which automatically prevents uncontrolled breaches. Shorter masts are generally more stable, easier to control, and offer greater manoeuvrability, whereas longer masts demand more precise weight shifts. The 80 cm mast requires greater body awareness and is not suited to the learning phase – it's aimed at experienced eFoilers.

What is the Anti-Breach System (ABS) on the Aerofoils eFoil?

The Anti-Breach System is a mechanical safety feature found exclusively on the Aerofoils 60 cm mast. An opening in the mast channels air into the drive unit as soon as the mast breaks through the water surface sufficiently. This automatically reduces thrust, allowing the board and rider to descend in a controlled manner. The system requires no electronics and is maintenance-free. It was developed specifically for the Aerofoils Hyperfly and is unique in the market.

Which eFoil mast do I need for the ocean and waves?

For riding in the ocean, in waves, or in choppy conditions, the 80 cm mast is the better choice. The increased clearance from the water surface means waves are less likely to reach the board, and the overall ride becomes calmer and more composed. Conditions still matter though – in shallow water, a longer mast can be problematic and increase the risk of a crash. A prerequisite is that the rider already has solid foundational experience in eFoiling.

Can you swap the eFoil mast later on?

Yes. Both Aerofoils mast lengths are available as individual spare parts. Starting with the 60 cm mast and upgrading to the 80 cm later is possible at any time. You don't need to commit to a mast length permanently at the point of purchase.

Why can you carve tighter turns with a longer eFoil mast?

When cornering, the board leans over, which causes the wings to move toward the water surface. With a longer mast, the wings stay deeper in the water and therefore further away from the zone where lift breaks down. This allows for steeper lean angles and tighter turns without the rider losing control.

Which eFoil mast does Aerofoils recommend for riders over 90 kg?

Beginners over 90 kg are best served starting with the 60 cm mast, as the Anti-Breach System is beneficial during the learning phase regardless of body weight. Once the fundamentals are in place, switching to the 80 cm mast makes sense: the greater mast length gives the foil more room to work cleanly and stably even with more weight on the board.

Which mast is best suited to an eFoil school?

For eFoil schools and rental operations, the 60 cm mast with ABS is the recommended choice. It comes as standard on the Aerofoils Hyperfly and Airfly, but can also be used on an Adventure with 2000 or 1350 series wings. The ABS reduces the crash risk during lessons and allows students to focus on riding itself more quickly. Larger wings generate more lift and make it easier for beginners to get up and going, while smaller wings are better suited to experienced riders looking for more speed and direct handling.
